We have all heard – “Knowledge is Power”. “Be lead by the Spirit”. Well there are many ways to gain Spiritual knowledge and I think a Scripture Study is one of them. We need to be guarded against evil and the only way to truly do that is with the Sword of Truth. The gospel of Jesus Christ. The word of God is our Weapon.
Even as a young married mother I either wanted to be in a Weekly Scripture study group or I wanted to start a Scripture Study Group. I wanted to be with a group of woman where we could discuss and grow spiritually together like “Birds of a Feather and Fly Together”. Or in a forest of Oak Trees as I’ve been told if we stand together as Trees we are stronger. Or even the simple adage. “Safety in numbers”.
Being a Christian and a Mormon from the LDS Church and living in Texas I could not find as LDS scripture study group close by. I had been raised in Utah where you are blessed to attend an Institute of Religion at University of Utah. Moving to Texas was a bit more of a challenge. Although I had done my own Institute study and used a varieties of studies throughout my life such as Seminary & Institute Manuals, I found something missing.
I now can express what that was. Being with other Women who also shared the same desire to be more spiritually in-tuned. I am happy to say I found such a group called BSF. Bible Study Fellowship. And I LOVE LOVED it. Totally for me. I asked my Bishop what he thought and he said “GO FOR IT” It is for all Christian Denominations. Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, you name it. The key to this group is we are not there to proselyte our religious opinions or faith. We were there to learn the BIBLE. Yeah. I had been a strong Book of Mormon Reader. But how am I going to be truly knowledgeable of the scriptures since I wanted to know my Bible scriptures as well.
Off I went to BSF. BSF has been going on for at least 50 years in the USA and other countries. And I know you can find one in your area. They are taught in the Day and in the Night. The are from Sept. to May. I first attended a day one while my kids went to school and then changed to a night one when they grew up and left the nest. There are so far, 12 studies in all which include a study of one book of the Bible. For instance the Book of John is taught one year, Romans another year, Isaiah, Revelations, Study of Moses, Minor Proogetsm so an and so forth. Is was fantastic. And boy did I learn a ton.
First of all you go to a church in the area that provides the study. They will give you the orientation. You are not to disclose your faith or religion to the group. You will be in a group of about 15 ladies. At the Bible Study I went to there were approx. 150 ladies or more. You start out by entering into the church chapel where we sing a hymn and then you divide up into a class of 15 or so. From that group you have a discussion on the 10-20 questions they give you from the previous week to discuss and answer. Then after about 40 minutes of discussion you go back to the chapel and here a discussion for the next’s week topic
Now that I’ve completed the 12 year study. What to do now? In 2016 I found a Methodist group that did a marvelous job with this study called “The Armor of God”.
Truly a blessing in my life. The author of the book is Priscilla Shirer. She is an outstanding woman in the Christian world. This study includes her speaking on a DVD and who doesn’t want to have the Armor of God on in this evil World. Hey I do. Her background is one of spiritual strength being born in a Christian home where here Dad was a Minister of a church. This study lasted 12 weeks. Really 6 week course, but so much information that we went over it again just to make sure we retained the gospel information of Paul to the Ephesians.
Next I did this book with the Methodist church called “Half Truths” It was for a summer study. Another study you could try is The Storm Inside: Trade the Chaos of How You Feel for the Truth of Who You Are by Sheila Walsh. She states
“We can feel a storm brewing, we are in the middle of a storm, or we are facing the aftermath of a storm. But don’t be afraid, because it is possible to grow through turbulent times. Storms show you what’s really going on inside, reveal what you really believe, and actually make you stronger”.
Also there are many books an authors you could study on your own or make them into a woman’s study class. Here are some suggestions:
Shattered Tablets – written by a jewish writer David Klinghoffer who states why we ignore the 10 Commandments at our Peril. Excellent information. The #1 Commandment that is not observed as it used to be is “Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy.” Yep – we think we can shop, go to movies, spend money, but the idea
is to be with your family and observe God and do Holy things like maybe visit the sick or help someone in need. Visit your neighbors and love them.
Next Sheri Dew’s new 2017 book “Worth the Wrestle”
Great book with intriguing questions for our Day. She states that “Spiritual wrestlers are seekers. They are men and women of faith who want to understand more than they presently do and who are serious about increasing the light and knowledge in their lives”.
The Second Comforter by Denver C Snuffer would make a great weekly study and Dissussion group.
This year I have decided to start my own using an Institute Manuel with 28 lessons called “Teachings and Doctrines of the Book of Mormon”
Last I have an uplifting book with short sayings but with profound deep thoughts called “Staying on the Path” by Wayne Dyer.
May you stay on the path of Righteous and strike chord with a word of knowledge like a key on the piano to make music in your life. May your Word of God – Your Sword, your Weapon carry you against the destroyer. Peace is the goal I believe for all in this life. What better peace than the Holy Spirit and Spirituality.
I have been asked what is the difference between your Book of Mormon and the Holy Bible. I testify that the Book of Mormon is Another Testament that proves the Bible is true. We Believe the Bible as far as it is translated correctly. We believe the Book of Mormon to be the Word of God. The bible was taken and used by man and passed down and there were some plain and precious truths lost. The Book of Mormon on the other hand came straight from Gold Plates written in Reformed Egyptian and never past down or tampered with by Man. Joseph Smith the Modern Prophet translated them. We have a Modern Day Prophet now for in Amos 3:7. is states “Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets”.
